Introduction

South Sudan is divided into ten states which correspond to the three historical regions of Sudan, namely Bahr el Ghazal, Equatoria and Great Upper Nile. In 2012 these historical regions were sub-divided into the following states:

Bahr el Ghazal - Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el Ghazal, Lakes State and Warrap;
Equatoria - Eastern Equatoria, Central Equatoria and Western Equatoria; and
Greater Upper Nile - Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile.

In October 2015, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir Mayardit issued a decree establishing 28 states in place of the 10 that were previously established. In February 2020, as a result of a peace agreement that ended the South Sudanese Civil War, the country returned to the original 10 states plus two administrative areas.
