The Abyei Area Administration was established on 31 August 2008. Currently, although considered to be in the hands of both nations, the reality is that South Sudan controls the Abyei Special Administrative Area de facto.

Emblem

The ASAA emblem under the South Sudan administration is in a circular seal format. In its center, a blue circle is found within a black outlined circle, depicting over it the initials ASAA (below), an upside-down catfish (center), and 9 interlocking rings (above). The upside-down catfish is called Ngok in the Dinka language and is a representation of the Ngok Dinka. The 9 rings signify the unity of the 9 Ngok tribes: Abior, Achaak, Achueng, Alei, Anyiel, Bongo, Diil, Mareng, and Manyuar. The outer ring is white with a black outline, reading ABYEI SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE AREA.

A variant to the area emblem exists which is: a blue circle depicting an upside-down catfish for the Ngok people, with half of an outer ring underneath connected reading A.S.A.A. in white as its initials. Existing as the upper half to the ring are 9 interlocking rings for the same Ngok tribes. This version is found on the administrative area flag.
