Franklin County is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in southwestern central Virginia. The county seat is the town of Rocky Mount. Franklin County is considered a suburb of the city of Roanoke and is named after Benjamin Franklin.
The flag of Franklin County features the county logo centered on a white field. The logo consists of a green circle with the white sails of a sailboat and a yellow pennant displayed on the circle, representing the leisure sailboating that takes place at Smith Mountain Lake, a resort community within the county. Below the logo are the words "Franklin County" in large gold letters, with the motto "A Natural Setting for Opportunity" in smaller, green, italicized lettering beneath.
