The Migrations Central Office (Oficína Central de Migración) was established 
by the Law on Migration in El Salvador, promulgated on 21 June 1933, and 
subsequently renamed to Directorate General of Migration (Dirección General de 
Migración). A formal register of recorded terrestrial migrations was initiated 
in 1938.
The first Law on Foreigners was promulgated on 1 October 1986. The 
DGME was established in April 2002 as the merger of the Directorate General of 
Migration and of the Department of Foreigners (Departamento de Extranjería).
The flag of the DGME is white with the directorate's logo.
