Presentation of Lobrigos (São Miguel)

Lobrigos (São Miguel) was one of the five communes of Santa Marta de Penaguião Municipality affected by the 2013 changes. It was alo called São Miguel de lobrigos or Santa Marta de Penaguião, and had probably been the seat of the municipality. It had 1365 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 4,42 km².
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 14 Aug 2024

In practice, it might not be a good idea to say that these two toponyms are synonym, rather that the municipal namesake settlement, named Santa Marta de Penaguião, was fully located on the territory of this commune, and yet the commune, unlike in such cases, is named after another of the settlements it contains — São Miguel de Lobrigos, often reworded with a hyphen as it shows on the scroll, or, in an even more abstruse way, with brackets.
Santa Marta de Penaguião is one of those municipalities lacking a synonym commune among its subdivisions (just like, say, Lisbon), and that´s that. Lobrigos is a sort of suburb to the southeast of the town named Santa Marta de Penaguião (see this online map, within an almost continuous urban sprawl; it is divided by a ridge saddle — the nearest side named after St. Michael and the farthest after St. John the Baptist (São João de Lobrigos or São João Batista de Lobrigos — because Portuguese toponymy is a sad mess), which is the namesake of a separate former commune.
