Presentation of Peso da Régua

This is a city that belongs to Vila Real district (Trás-os-Montes traditional province) has a 97 km² area, eight communes (freguesias) and about 25 000 inhabitants.
Sérgio Horta, 11 Dec 1999

This municipality as such, like most of the other 307 current ones, was established in 1844 based on previous forms of local government severalcenturies old. What happened in 1985 was just the routine upgrade of the honorific status of the nominal seat settlement from town rank to city rank. According to Sérgio Horta Peso da Régua gained the rank of a city and became seat of a municipality on 14 August 1985.
