The municipality of Marija Gorica (2,089 inhabitants in 2001, 184 in the village of Marija Gorica) is located some 30 km north-west of Zagreb, on the border with Slovenia, on river Sutla. Formed in 1995 by parts of the disbanded Municipality of Hruševec Kupljenski, the municipality is composed of ten villages, the largest being Kraj Donji (493 inh.), the seat of a railway station. Ante Kovačić (1854-1889), one of the greatest Croatian realist writers, was born in the village of Oplaznik, part of the municipality of Marija Gorica.

The symbols of Marija Gorica were adopted in 1998 by the Municipality Assembly and approved by the Ministry of Administration on 17 June
1998.
The symbols were designed by Drago Jančić and Slavko Bratić, two art teachers in local schools and renown painters (presentation).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle. The colour of the flag is prescribed as Pantone Reflex Blue C.

The coat of arms is "Azure an elephant argent". The colour are prescribed as Pantone Reflex Blue C, Yellow 123 C, and white / silver.
The paleontological remains of an ancient elephant were found in Marija Gorica in the first decade of the 20th century, estimated to be 10 million years old. The species, named Deinotherium giganteum by Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger (1913), is characterized by tusks bowed downwards and backwards from the lower jaw.
