The municipality of Benitagla (94 inhabitants in 2008; 700 ha; municipal website) is located in the Sierra de los Filabres, 65 km north-east of Almería.
In the Morisco period, Benitaglia had 60 inhabitants, all Moriscos. After the Alpujarra Wars and the expelling of the Moriscos, the re-settlement of the village was organized in 1572 by the Re-settlement Administration of the Royal Chancelry of Granada. Its isolated location, far from the lord's manor and its lack of lands allowed only six colonists to resettle the village.

The flag and arms of Benitagla, approved on 21 November 2004 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 16 December 2004 to the Directorate General of Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 11 January 2005 by the Directorate General of Local Administration and published on 25 January 2005 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 16, pp. 22-23 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Panel in proportions 2:3; quarterly: 1 and 4. Black with three yellow eight-pointed stars placed two and one, 2. and 3. White with a red castle.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Sable, three mounts argent issuant from the base, the central higher, charged with a castle flanked on each side by a crescent surmounted by a scallop, all gules, in chief six eight-pointed stars or, three in each canton. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown closed.
The mounys represent the peaks of the Sierra de los Filabres, visible from everywhere in the municipality. The stars represent the light rays that appear in the sky every year in August. The crescent and the scallop symbolize the Morisco and Christian cultures, respectively. The castle represents the ruins known as castillico, built by the aforementioned cultures. The red colour recalls the fighting for freedom at the time.
