The municipality of Alcóntar (618 inhabitants in 2013; 9,400 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km north of Almería.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 7 November 2012The flag and arms of Alcóntar, adopted on 5 February 1994 by the Municipal Council and revised on 30 May 1997, as suggested on 14 March 1996 by the Royal Academy of Cordóba, are prescribed by Decree No. 190, adopted on 22 July 1997 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 26 August 1997 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 99, p. 10,451 (text). This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Flag one and a half time longer (from hoist to fly) than high, white. In the middle of the flag is placed the crowned coat of arms, vertically centered, and in height, crown included, half of the flag's hoist. In the upper left corner is placed a yellow rectangle, in length and height 1/3 of the respective size of the flag, charged with a blue wavy stripe symbolizing river Almanzora that has its source on the municipal territory.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Fessy wavy argent and azure of six pieces a tree eradicated vert, 2a. Pacheco: Argent two cauldrons per fess checky or and gules with three snakes or [...], 2b. Acuña: Sable a bend or charged in chief and base of nine wedges [cuñas] azure in the middle argent a cross flory gules (Pereyra), a bordure argent charged with five escutcheons azure five bezants argent per saltire [...] (Portugal). (Crosn not mentioned)
The waves represent river Almanzora. The tree recalls the forest resources. Pacheco and Acuña are old lords of Alcóntar.
