Shield Azure, a city gate Argent, crowned by three towers Argent roofed Gules and two embattled turrets in between, the open port is charged with an inescutcheon Azure, charged with a lion rampant barry of Argent and Gules.
Meaning:
The city was founded by Knight Hermann von Spegel between 1290 and 1294. The oldest surviving seal is known from prints of 1393. It already displayed a city wall and three towers in a field semy of roses. The current arms are based on seals from the late 15th century and the secret seal of 1633. Armourials since 1605 painted the lion either as blue in a red field or as golden in a red field. As these lions are of uncertain origin, the lion of Hesse was used instead, at least until 1967 displayed in an inescutcheon.
