Meaning:
The city seals since 1264 display a knight's shield charged with a lion surrounded by dragons, later on by branches in the 14th century, Since the end of the 15th century the lion is combined with the cities initials. It was the predominant version of the local arms until the 17th century, especially displayed by Siebmacher (1605). The current lion, also called "griffon-lion" was granted by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig in 1916. Acc. to source the griffon lion had been already displayed by Siebmacher before.
