Description of coat of arms:
Shield Or, a bar Gules, issuant from bar St. Paul in half length portrait, robed Gules with his attributes book and sword, in chief three points of a blue label.
Meaning:
Cloppenburg gained city rights in 1435 from Heinrich II of Moers, Bishop of Münster. The arms were granted at the same time and display the arms of the Counts of Moers at the time, with St. Paul as patron saint of Münster. Originally the saint was kneeling, but later he is displayed in half length portrait. As a crest St. Paul was used. This crest is now rarely used. The original black colour of the bar from the Counts of Moers was changed to red one in 1935, as it was the colour of Münster. The flag colours are those of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.
