The municipality of So Joo do Paraso (23,417 inhabitants in 2014; 19,256
ha) is located on the border with the State of Bahia, 780 km of Belo Horizonte
and 180 km south-west of Vitria da Conquista.
So Joo do Paraso was
established, as the district of So Joo da Raposa, part of the municipality of
Rio Pardo. The district was named for its patron saint (St. John) and for the
most common animal ("raposa", "fox") found in the region. In 1888, Raimundo
Meireles, a descendant of an earlier colonist, offered a plot located near river
So Joo to erect a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Sade. The village
turned into a regional center of trade, to be renamed to So Joo do Paraso.
The municipality of So Joo do Paraso was established in 1943.
